Bialystok Bialystok

History and facts:

Until the end of the 17th century Bia³ystok was a village. From 1685 it was the Branicki family's property (mansion), and later it belonged to the Potocki family. In 1749 it got civic rights and from 1795 the city was in the Prussian territory, and later in the Russian one. The development of the city and its industry took place in the 2nd half of the 19th century. Today it is the provincial capital with about 275 000 inhabitants. A large industrial and research-cultural centre of the region, as well as a railway and road junction (E67).

Locatiion:

Located between picturesque areas of the Bia³ostocka Upland (Wysoczyzna Bia³ostocka), by the Bia³a River, which is Supra¶la's side stream. Surrounded by the Knyszyñska Primeval Forest (Puszcza Knyszyñska), which is inhabited by wisents, lynxes, wolves, and beavers, and on its area the Landscape Park was founded. In a short distance to the south-west, there is the Narwiañski National Park, while in a further distance towards the north the most valuable park in Poland - the Biebrzañski National Park stretches which was inscribed in the UNESCO list.

In Bia³ystok, there are numerous green areas and parks such as: J. Dziekoñska's, Central, Zwierzyniec, and Palace Parks, as well as a unique natural place - the complex of ponds (200 ha area), breeding area for about 200 bird species.

Architecture:

Here is located the stateliness Branicki family's mansion surrounded by a two-level garden, once known as the "Podlaski Versailles", known as one of the most beautiful Baroque palace-garden layouts in Poland. The palace was rebuilt in the 17th century by Tylman of Gameren; unfortunately the great interior was completely burnt in July 1944. Nowadays the Medical Academy is located here. In the park there are: a figery, an orangery and a pavilion from the 18th century, the country armoury known as cekhauz, the town hall and Baroque houses. The preserved Branicki family's summer mansion is situated in Choroszcza near Bia³ystok. Nowadays a museum of interiors is located in Baroque interiors of the palace. In Bia³ystok one should pay attention to the triangular Ko¶ciuszko's Market, and St. Roch's church and St Nicolas the Wonderworker's Orthodox church are also worth seeing.

Cultural life:

In the city several periodic events take place, such as: The Podlaski Marathon in September, "Fall with Blues" in November, Days of Borderland Culture in March, or an extremely interesting International Festival of the Orthodox Music in May. In order to familiarise better with the region one can visit the Bia³ostockie Village Museum, as well as the Historical Museum and A. Karny's Museum of Sculptures . One can also relax also in theatres and a concert hall.
