Located on left edge of the Vistula, in the Toruńska Valley, along the mouth of the Brda stretch and the Bydgoski channel. Surrounded from the south by the Bydgoska Primeval Forest (Puszcza Bydgoska), from the north by the beautiful Brda's valley and numerous lakes, and from the west by the queen of Polish rivers and the Nadwiślański Landscape Park.
In 1995 Bydgoszcz won the 2nd prize in the World City - Garden Competition. Apart from canals, Kazimierz the Great's Park - the oldest, once the Nuns of the order of St. Clare's convent garden, Jan Kochanowski's Park - in the English style with the great virtuosos and composers' monuments, Wincenty Witos's Park - with the concert bowl - all these parks contributed to this as well. A great nature enclave also stretches within the city borders - the Myślęcinek Forest Park of Culture and Leisure. Another attraction is also the Garden of Polish fauna (100 animals' species) and the Botanical and Mountain Plants Garden with an alpine garden.
Architecture:
In Bydgoszcz numerous parks, squares, remote parts of greenery interlace with monuments of business and technology. The city was born thanks to the Brdza, it determines the commercial nature of the town's infrastructure. Between the 14th and the 17th centuries, cereal granaries, mills, warehouses and oat mills emerged.
The so-called Mill Island is worth attention - an area picturesquely located in the city centre, it delights with the antique chestnut avenue paved with "cobblestones". On the island other attractions are: locks on the Brdza, weirs, bridges and old mills. Once five giant water wheels were driving the Royal Mint's machinery. Not far from the Mill Island, an ordinary monument of water engineering is located - the Bydgoski Canal. Built in the years 1773 - 74. Its most beautiful part is the Old Canal with hydrotechnological devices operating until today, and once they allowed for sailing.
