The Dukes' village, mentioned in 1220, the local privilege on the basis of the German law comes from 1356. In 1382 prince Władysław Opolski placed the Paulite monastery next to the church on Jasna Góra. Since the 14th century the centre of the Marian worships, a religious and cultural centre.

It is the most important centre of religious worship in Poland, related to the picture of the Mother of God on Jasna Góra. The most precious monument is the Paulite monastic complex from the 14th - 17th centuries. At the same time it belongs to the three main centres of the Marian worship in the Christian world, annually the Sanctuary is visited by about 4 - 5 mln pilgrims (after Lourdes and Fatima). This complex consists of a basilican church from the 17th century, monastic buildings with the knight hall and the library, the museum with exhibition, the permanent monastic exhibition in the Arsenal, fortified ramparts with gates and one of the richest church vaults in Poland. The famous picture of Częstochowska Mother of God "the Black Madonna" is located in St Mary's Birth Chapel. Around the monastery there are beautiful Stations of the Cross miraculously blending with the monastic park.

Another great sightseeing attraction is also an extremely interesting archaeological reserve of the Lusatian Culture in Częstochowa Raków. The Regional Museum in Częstochowa has extended divisions presenting the history of the town, its mineral industry, and art galleries, concert halls and theatres.
