History and facts:The first settlements can be traced to the late period of the Stone Age. The first stronghold was built in the 9th century on the Ostrów Tumski (Cathedral Island). Subsequently it was surrounded by various, town-like settlements. In the 10th century Poznań was the main site of Polish dukes, the residence of Mieszko I, who converted to Christianity in 966 and in 968 the first Polish bishoprics was founded here. In 1253 the city was founded, based on Magdeburg law. With the second partition in 1793, Poznań fell to Prussia, and became the centre of fighting against germanization. In 1918 the Great Poland Uprising began, which liberated the Greater Poland (Wielkopolska). Today Poznań has almost 580 000 inhabitants which makes it the biggest city in the Greater Poland region. The city is a vibrant centre for e.g. tourism and trade (the biggest fair ground in Poland). It is an important, international communication junction (international routes no. 11 and 2), it also has a river port and Poznań-Ławica airport. Location:Poznań is located at the edge of Poznań and Gniezno Lakelands, on the Warta river and its side streams. It is distinguished by the great amount of woodland, which influences highly the beauty of the city. Poznań has ten city parks, botanical gardens, two zoological gardens, forest parks in river valleys of Warta, Bogdanka and Cybina. It also has Millenium Park at Malta Lake. In Wilson Park you will find one of the biggest Palm Houses in Europe. A few kilometers south of Poznań there is the Wielkopolski National Park, which landscape was strongly influenced by a glacier. Its fauna and flora are characterized by richness of kinds. Architecture:Plenty of precious, art and architecture monuments are the city tourist attraction. The oldest of them are located on the Ostrów Tumski, the island between the rivers - Warta and Cybinka. Apart from the Gothic cathedral, there are also the 18th century Archbishop Palace, the 15th century Gothic Church of the Virgin Mary, the Gothic psauteria, canon houses, the building of Lubrański Academy and the Archdiocesan Museum. The Cathedral, previously preromanian, is the oldest temple in Poland. It was many times destroyed and restored. The reconstruction after the war refers to its Gothic form. The naves and chapels are home to many precious works of art, e.g. the mausoleum of Piast dynasty rulers. |
