The most popular Polish watering-place, holiday resort, cabotage harbor. It also plays spa resort (the Balneological and Cure House - brine bath, mud bath) and touring roles. A fishing village from the 13th century, from the middle of the 14th century - a summer resort for rich townspeople and merchants from Gdańsk, from the 19th century - a watering-place. In the years 1919-39 it was under the jurisdiction of Free Town Gdansk. Nowadays it is the smallest town of urban-harbor complex of Trójmiasto (Tri-City). The oldest monument of the town is the Spanish mansion from the 17th century, and the Southern Baths is a very valuable monument of wooden construction. The attractions of the town are Opera Lena (Forest Opera - since 1961 international song festivals) and the longest wooden pier in Europe (512 m long, built from the middle of the 19th century), a spa park and a wide-spread beach. The street leading to the pier is called the Street of the Heroes of Monte Cassino - a famous pedestrian promenade. Along the promenade there are numerous pubs and galleries. In summer it becomes the place where street theatres and musicians perform and artists show their works. There are also two cinemas. Sopot has the Esperanto Museum and a horseracing track. Moreover within the city area there are the "Zajęcze Wzgórze" ("Hare Hill") Nature Reserve, which protects 200-year-old pines and the "Zamkowa Góra" ("Castle Mountain") Archeological-Nature Reserve, former castle from the 18th-19th centuries. |
