History and facts:The beginnings of Zakopane date back to the 16th century and they are connected with the forming of the permanent shepherds settlements. The village began to develop in the second half of the 19th century, i.a. with the help of Tytus Chałubiński, the great promoter of Zakopane's climate values and the Tatra Mountains Association founded in 1874. In 1886 the village became the climate station. In 1899 a railway to Zakopane was opened and in 1933 Zakopane was given civic rights. Since then it has been called the winter capital of Poland. Zakopane is the biggest mountain and winter sports tourist centre as well as an important cultural centre. One can get here by train or by road no. 85, which connects Zakopane with Cracow (about 110 km), where an international airport is located. An airport in Slovakian Poprad is not far from here either (70 km). In the vicinity of Zakopane there are three border crossings: 24h crossing in Chyżne, in Łysa Polana and in Chochołów. Location:Zakopane is situated on the banks of Biały Dunajec River, in the mountainous valley on Podhale, at the feet of the highest Polish mountains (2500 m above sea level) - the Tatra Mountains. It is so called "Gate" to the Tatra National Park, recognized as particularly valuable, inscribed in the list of MAB Biosphere Reserves Directory. In the self centre of the town the unique, non-built-up area - The Równia Krupowa plain - is situated. It is the inhabitants' and their guests' favourite place for walks. Right from here one can admire the astonishing view of the Tatra Mountains. This is also the place where outdoor events are organized. Architecture:The authentic, folk culture of Podhale highlanders is visible in the whole Zakopane. It fascinates with its beauty and uniqueness. The 19th century historic buildings are the most precious of all. It is particularly noticeable along Ko¶cieliska street, which is a complex of wooden architecture, typical for Podhale region. A wooden Old Church (1845 - 1851) and G±sienica Chapel, the first sacred building from 1800, are located here. |
